DC kicks off Batman 80th anniversary celebration at SXSW 2019

Batman enthusiasts were able to enjoy photo opportunities and limited-edition merchandise.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Caped Crusader now has his own mural in Downtown Austin.

The Batman mural was painted on the side of a building on Fourth Street.

It was all part of Batman's 80th anniversary celebration in Austin on Friday night at the "battiest" spot in the capital – the Congress Avenue bridge.

DC said they would be kicking off their anniversary celebration at SXSW 2019 by providing multiple fan experiences, photo opportunities and an exclusive t-shirt collection featuring illustrations from popular DC artists to celebrate The Dark Knight.

Onlookers strolled up all day to take pictures of the “Instagrammable” mural by local artist MEZ DATA.

"He’s always been one of my favorite comic book characters," MEZ DATA said.

He spraypainted it over a few days.

"If you were gonna do this, where else would you do it other than Austin, Texas where we have the largest urban bat population in the world?"

Organizers said Austin was the perfect fit for this event

“There’s no better place than a place that has the iconic bats – and no place better than SXSW as an event where we’ve got thousands and thousands of fans here," Kevin Morris, the VP of Franchise Management and Marketing for Warner Bros, said.

There was supposed to be a "Bat Signal" lit up against a tall tower on Rainey Street. After more than an hour past the scheduled time, technical difficulties resulted in a possible rescheduling. KVUE will update you if it is re-scheduled.
