Could Evan Rachel Wood have been Regina George?
The Westworld star appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on the same night as Mean Girls writer Tina Fey, and disclosed that she had the opportunity to star in the beloved 2004 movie.
“It’s even worse, I turned it down,” Wood said when Fallon asked if she’d auditioned for the teen comedy.
Though the 30-year-old actress didn’t clarify which part she was offered, she did explain why she made the difficult decision to not take a role in the film.
“Listen, there’s a reason! It’s a good reason,” she said. “The only reason is because I was already supposed to do a film called Pretty Persuasion that was set in a high school that was very Heathers-esque, and it was very similar! So, I was already doing that, so I was like, ‘I can’t!’”
Pretty Persuasion came out in 2005, a year after Mean Girls, and also starred Fey’s 30 Rock co-star, Jane Krakowski. Wood played Catholic school girl Kimberly Joyce, who accuses her teacher of sexual assault and harassment so she can get the spotlight for herself.
It certainly didn’t go on to have the acclaim and wide fan base that Mean Girls did. The beloved film, starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Fey, was even recently turned into a Broadway musical.
While on The Tonight Show, Wood tried to apologize to Fey for turning down the movie. “As long as the next movie you’re doing is not about a robot uprising, I will happily [do it]!” she joked, referring to her role as a lifelike robot on HBO's Westworld.
