Multiple cases of 'whooping cough' reported in Travis County since June

Since late June 2018, eight people have contracted "whooping cough" in Travis County, according to Austin Public Health.

AUSTIN — In three months, doctors in Travis County have reported seeing eight confirmed cases of "whooping cough," formally known as pertussis, in infants and adolescents.

The CDC defines pertussis as a highly contagious respiratory disease that is characterized by uncontrollable, violent coughing, which can make breathing difficult.

Austin Public Health said out of the eight people diagnosed with "whooping cough," only one person had received all of the recommended vaccinations. The organization said it's noteworthy that six of the eight people had not received the recommended vaccination for pertussis.

The CDC said the disease effects people of all ages but becomes potentially deadly for babies less than a year old. Pertussis is spread by standing in close proximity to someone who is coughing or sneezing. Health officials said, often times, babies contract the disease from older siblings.

Austin Public Health said vaccination is key to preventing the spread of pertussis. They encourage parents to check the status of their child's immunization status with their healthcare provider.

Austin Public Health offers free vaccinations for uninsured people. Call 512-972-5520 to set up an appointment.
