Austin Justice Coalition leader charged with assault after allegedly punching man on Sixth Street

Chas Moore's attorney says his client got into an altercation with a participant, who then called police.

AUSTIN — A well-known Austin community activist is being charged with assault with injury after a recent encounter on Sixth Street, his attorney confirms.

Chas Moore leads the Austin Justice Coalition. That organization played a key role last year in speaking out against a proposed contract between officers and the city.

Attorney Brian McGiverin said Moore got into an altercation that led one of the participants to call police, and now the misdemeanor charge against Moore.

According to an arrest affidavit, on May 27, a man who works for the Recess Arcade Bar located in downtown Austin told police that Moore punched him in the face.

Moore reportedly recently worked for the bar before he was fired and banned from it. Police said the two got into an altercation after Moore refused to leave the bar. Moore also allegedly tried to push the man down the stairs.

Moore has not turned himself into the Travis County Jail, but likely will do so in the next couple of days. He said he has no comment until doing so.

Moore helped create the Austin Justice Coalition, whose website describes the organization as "a community organization that focuses on improving the quality of life for people who are Black, Brown, and poor."

Moore's bond is set at $4,000. According to online records, he is not in police custody as of Thursday afternoon.
