'Breakthrough innovation' | Did UT just discover the world's first grow-it-yourself breakfast taco?

In a video posted on April Fools' Day, The University of Texas at Austin claims it has made a discovery that can change the world.

AUSTIN -- Ah, if only it wasn't April Fools' Day.

In a video posted on April 1, 2018, The University of Texas at Austin announced a "breakthrough innovation" -- the world's first breakfast taco you can grow yourself.

While it may be too good to be true, the university enlisted some of its top researchers for the delicious prank.

"This new discovery is bigger than the personal computer, it's bigger than the internet," says Bob Metcalfe, professor of innovation/inventor of the Ethernet.

"This is really going to change the world, it's a breakthrough," adds Livia Eberlin, assistant professor of chemistry and inventor of the cancer-detecting MasSpec Pen.

"It's hard to imagine a project with the scope and potential impact of this one," says Dan Stanzione, executive director of Texas Advanced Computing Center.

The video even features a cameo by president Greg Fenves.

“Did they grow this with the foil on,” he asks. “Amazing.”

The video jokes that the breakfast taco discovery pales in comparison to UT's other projects, even the ones that tackle clean air and other fundamental discoveries of the universe.

But in a city known for its taco lovers, we give this tasty April Fools' Day trick five stars.

As psychology professor Art Markman says, "we all know the breakfast taco is the best food on the planet."
