Teen dies in apparent drowning at lake in Cedar Park

Police said they don't think lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident.

CEDAR PARK, Texas — A teen is dead following an apparent drowning at a lake in Cedar Park.

Multiple agencies responded to reports of a missing swimmer at the lake behind the YMCA in Cedar Park on Saturday afternoon.

After searching for several hours, authorities found the body of a missing 15-year-old boy.

Police said the teen was swimming with a group of friends in the lake behind the Twin Lakes Family YMCA when he began experiencing distress. They also said they don't think lifeguards were on duty at the time of the incident.

"During the evening of June 1, Texas Game Wardens responded to assist the Cedar Park Police (CPP), the Williamson County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), Cedar Park Fire Department and the Georgetown Fire Department Dive Team with a drowning at Twin Lakes Park," Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) said in a statement Sunday night.

"Witnesses reported that the juvenile victim was having trouble staying above water after jumping from a cliff with friends," TPWD continued. "The WCSO Dive Team recovered the victim. No further details are available at this time. CPP is the lead agency moving forward. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time."

"I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest sympathies to the family," Lt. Justin Miller with the Cedar Park Police Department said. "This is a horribly tragic incident, and we are doing everything we can with the family to provide support in this horrible incident."

Laura Arredondo, chief marketing officer for the YMCA of Central Texas, said, "We want to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young man. We are thankful for the quick response by the first responders. We will continue to work with the Cedar Park Police Department in their ongoing investigation as the area where the incident occurred is not part of where YMCA programs take place, nor were any programs taking place at that time."

Police said the Texas Game Wardens are investigating the incident.
