AUSTIN -- "O" no! Central Texas needs more O negative blood donations to the sole provider of blood to Central Texas hospitals, We Are Blood.
After a recent increase in traumas the past few days, the already low O negative blood and platelets supply is currently at a dangerously low level. According to a press release from the blood donation organization, with spring break and SXSW happening this week, they have a low donor turnout.
O negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused into any patient. Platelets are a component of blood that aid in clotting and are often used to help trauma and cancer patients. Their short shelf life of five days makes it difficult to maintain a steady supply.
Healthy Central Texans can schedule an appointment to donate O negative blood or platelets here. Appointments will be at any of the three We Are Blood locations or mobile drives, and they also accept walk-ins.
As added incentive, along with donors receiving branded merchandise, the blood donation organization is hosting the Beer Positive Brewery Challenge, where 22 local breweries will be competing. Those that vote from March 13 to March 16, can cast their vote for the brewery of their choice and enter to win a Yeti cooler. A list of competing breweries is available here.
According to We Are Blood, over 40 hospitals and medical facilities in a 10-county area depend on the steady supply of blood the organization provides. We Are Blood ensures that all patients served have access to blood when they need it the most.
Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 115 pounds.
