Hundreds of men in Austin trim their beards to help fight prostate cancer

Wahl clippers is donating $1 to the "Zero" prostate cancer organization for each facial hair trim at Austin's Pecan Street Festival.

AUSTIN — Men in Austin are trimming their beards, not for fashion but to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.

Quite an unusual day for Eamonn Lydon, who was walking down Sixth street observing the different concession stands at the Pecan Street Festival.

"I've been working on my beard for a while," Lydon said. "I don't cut it well so that's why I'm here."

The Wahl clipper company is in Austin this weekend using their skills to help fight prostate cancer.

"My uncle had prostate cancer, so that helps a little more from my part, " Lydon explained.

"One in seven guys are affected at some way," said Justin Patricoff, tour manager for Wahl Clipper Corporation.

He said a regular checkup is always important if you are over 40.

For every trim, Wahl will donate a dollar to the nonprofit group called Zero Cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men.

"My uncle battled through but unfortunately passed away because it was so tough," Lydon said. "It makes me feel good to trim my beard because it'll help someone else as well."

"If prostate cancer is caught at an early stage, your chances in overcoming it are greater," Patricoff explained.

It's a small gesture that could save someone's life one trim at a time.

In addition to Wahl donating $1 for each trim, event-goers also have the option of donating money out of their own pockets.

Wahl is partnering with "Zero," a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting prostate cancer. If you would like to donate, click here.
