Man dies while swimming across Lake LBJ early Fourth of July morning

The Llano County Sheriff's Office said four people attempted to swim across the lake near the RR 2900 bridge. One of them did not make it to the other side.

LLANO COUNTY, Texas -- A man is dead after officials say he attempted to swim across Lake LBJ in the early morning hours of July 4.

The Llano County Sheriff's Office said the call came in around 2:55 a.m. reporting a missing swimmer on the Llano River arm of Lake LBJ. Deputies responded and requested aid from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

There, officials said it appeared four people chose to swim from one side of the lake to the other near the RR 2900 bridge. One of the swimmers reportedly turned back while the others kept swimming. Two of the swimmers made it the shore when they noticed the third swimmer, a 38-year-old man from Austin, was in distress and had disappeared under water.

The Kingsland VFD, Horseshoe Bay police and TPWD responded with a boats at approximately 4 a.m. and began searching with sonar, officials said. The victim was located and recovered by a diver by 12:34 p.m.

Officials are awaiting autopsy results.
