The Round Rock Police Department has asked anyone with dash cam technology in their vehicles who were driving on Interstate 35 in Round Rock between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, to please send the footage to the department.
RRPD said it believes any footage gained from citizens who drove by the area in the specified time period would aid the investigation into the death of pedestrian Amir Azad and injury of Officer Charles Whites, who suffered critical injuries. Whites has been transferred to a rehabilitation hospital in Austin, officials told KVUE on March 20.
Police said they received a call about a person walking on the roadway around 5:27 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived on scene, they found the person, identified as Amir Azad, 25, dead. Officials said they have no description of the car that hit that pedestrian.
Whites was in the process of directing traffic around the accident when he was hit by a car around 6:41 a.m. near Palm Valley Boulevard, according to Round Rock Police.
Police said the driver who ran into Whites has been arrested, but the department is still gathering evidence in the case. A suspect has not been identified in Azad's death, police said.
Any footage, whether deemed significant or not, is asked to be sent to Officer Jim Bell at jhbell@roundrocktexas.gov or Lauren Weaver at lweaver@roundrocktexas.gov.
The Round Rock Police Officers Association and Round Rock Police Foundation have teamed up to accept donations to provide financial assistance to Officer Whites and his family. To donate, click here.
