AUSTIN — The Texas unemployment rate is at a 40-year low, workforce officials said Friday.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the unemployment rate for the Lone Star State fell to 3.8 percent. That's a drop from the 3.9 percent Texas saw in August 2018.

At 3.8 percent, Workforce Commission officials said it's the lowest the unemployment rate has been recorded in four decades.

“Texas employers continue to contribute to our state’s success with private-sector employers adding 16,700 jobs in September and accounting for an impressive 402,500 jobs over the year,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chair Ruth Ruggero Hughs. “Texas’ continued addition of jobs over a twenty-seven month period demonstrates the competitive advantage and market opportunities available to our Texas employers and world-class workforce.”

Commission officials said the top industry for job growth during the month of September was the financial activities sector, which added 5,800 jobs in the month.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin-Round Rock area tied with the College Station-Bryan area for the third metropolitan area with the month's lowest unemployment rate. The Midland area ranked first for the metro area with the lowest unemployment rate.
