President Donald Trump on Monday sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia didn't meddle in the 2016 election, which directly goes against what U.S. intelligence agencies have said.
The announcement came on the heels of a lengthy one-on-one meeting at the presidential palace, just Putin, Trump and their translators.
Despite the bipartisan backlash over President Trump's comments, the two leaders say it was a successful, productive day.
Touting the goods the state of Texas produces, Governor Greg Abbott tweeted about the meeting, writing, "As Trump meets with Putin, he's probably telling him 'Don't Mess with Texas, they're bigger than you.'"
So we decided to verify.
According to the United Nations and the Human Services Commission, our population is smaller than Russia's. But the gross domestic product -- the goods our state produces as a whole -- totals $1.7 trillion. That compares to Russia's $1.28 trillion. Meanwhile, California tops both with a GDP of $2.7 trillion.
One interesting note, there is one area where Russia outpaces Texas -- production of crude. Russia pumps out nearly 11 million barrels per day, according to the country's energy minister. Texas stands at 4.2 million barrels per day.
So, we can verify the governor's tweet is in fact true.
