Natasha Harper-Madison wins runoff election, claims Austin City Council seat for District 1

After tight results on Election Day, with a difference of about 200 votes, Natasha Harper-Madison has claimed a victory in the Austin City Council race for District 1.

AUSTIN — After a tight election night last month for the District 1 Austin City Council seat, the runoffs resulted in a win for Natasha Harper-Madison, according to Travis County unofficial results.

The sitting city council members still need to vote on Harper-Madison's appointment.

According to the unofficial Travis County results, Harper-Madison won the election with 72 percent of the vote, while her opponent, Mariana Salazar, received 28 percent of the vote.

Harper-Madison will claim councilmember Ora Houston’s seat encompassing Central and East Austin. Houston announced in June that after months of reflection and conversations with her confidants, she would not be seeking a second term. She was elected on Jan. 6, 2015.

On Election Day in November, Harper-Madison received 25 percent of the vote, a difference of about 200 votes. Salazar, received 26 percent. The pair were the clear frontrunners in a race that initially included four other candidates.
