OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma — The University of Texas baseball team opened the Big 12 baseball tournament with a 3-2 loss to Kansas.

Matteo Bocchi started on the mound for the Longhorns, with coach David Pierce holding his better pitchers for later in the tournament. Bocchi allowed runners on base in the first two innings, but didn’t allow a run.

In the fourth inning, however, the Jayhawks broke the deadlock when Brendt Citta hit an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Texas answered after falling to an 0-2 deficit. Junior catcher DJ Petrinsky ripped an RBI single to score junior infielder Masen Hibbeler.

But that’s all the Longhorns could manage to score in the fifth inning against Kansas ace Jackson Goddard.

The Jayhawks' Devin Foyle extended the Kansas lead to 3-1 with a home run in the eighth inning.

But the Longhorns wouldn't go down without a fight. Texas began to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth due to a single and a walk that put two men on for Ryan Reynolds, who narrowed the Jayhawks' lead to 3-2 with an RBI single.

With runner's at first and third base, a fielders choice by Petrinsky ended the game.

Losing first games of the conference tournament is nothing new for the Longhorns. Texas lost its first conference tournament game ten times in the last 20 years, including when the Longhorns won the National Championship in 2002 and 2005.

After Baylor beat Oklahoma 4-0, the Longhorns will head to the losers bracket to play an elimination game against Oklahoma at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
