AUSTIN, Texas — A beverage-packing manufacturer is expanding operations with a new plant and headquarters in southeast Austin.
KVUE’s media partners at the Austin American-Statesman report American Canning has signed a long-term lease to occupy a nearly 155,000-square-foot facility at Park 183 – an industrial site near the Austin airport.
The company makes canning supplies for craft breweries through an e-commerce platform.
The company's CEO, David Racino, says demand for their product surged when craft breweries closed taprooms and pivoted to packaged sales. Racino told the Statesman it added more than 270 clients "overnight" by the end of March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began.
American Canning also has mobile canning operations at breweries such as ABGB and St. Elmo. It works with other beverage producers, including wine, mead, cider, coffee, tea, kombucha, soda, water and juice.
“We are designing our plant to cater to our client base of craft beverage producers, who need guaranteed availability of cans for low-volume orders,” Racino said. “Changes in market dynamics, most recently with the can shortage, made it clear we needed to create our own supply to build a more modern ecosystem allowing small brands to thrive.”
American Canning is set to move into the new space in spring of this year. It will allow the company to have three times more capacity for machine manufacturing and supply distribution of aluminum cans, can handles, case trays and other products.
The company will also move its current headquarters from 8219 Burleson Road to Park 183, the Statesman reports. It plans to double its current 75-person workforce within the next year.
