STARR COUNTY, Texas — As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, the Texas-Mexico border is a continued topic of discussion nationwide.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told KVUE on Thanksgiving that he wants to help Trump's administration with border security, particularly highlighting Starr County.
"We're all on the same page here," Abbott said. "Listen, everybody here, we are focused on the same mission. One, secure the border. Two, to assist the Trump administration and everything they're going to do."
The governor also said he wants to arrest and deport the "criminals who have been allowed to cross the border" to make the community a safer place.
Starr County could soon be home to a 1,402-acre detention facility after an offer from Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, the Texas Tribune reports.
A border wall is also being constructed on the property, which is located roughly 100 miles southeast of Laredo. This is part of the "Jocelyn Initiative," named after a young child police said was killed in Houston by Venezuelan men who were not legal U.S. citizens.
The Texas county is just one of many that Trump will likely focus on when he enters office for a second term on Jan. 20.
The president-elect plans to implement a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, which would impact immigration from the south. He recently discussed this issue with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said her country is "taking care of" caravans traveling across the border.
Trump said he plans to introduce the tariffs on his first day back in the White House.
