Passenger falls to death after San Marcos police chase ends in crash near New Braunfels

Officials said stolen firearms and body armor were recovered after the chase.

COMAL COUNTY, Texas — Multiple agencies are investigating a police chase that ended in one suspect falling to their death in Comal County.

According to officials, police in San Marcos spotted a Hyundai that appeared to be stolen early Tuesday morning. They also saw two juvenile suspects from San Antonio inside the vehicle.

After trying to pull the vehicle over on the southbound lanes of Interstate 35, a chase involving the San Marcos and New Braunfels police departments began. Officials said at some point, the vehicle left the interstate before traveling down a gravel road and crashing into a boulder at a rock quarry in Comal County.

Both suspects ran from the vehicle when the passenger fell approximately 70 feet into an open quarry pit. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, New Braunfels police were able to detain the driver of the vehicle.

The suspect who died has yet to be identified. During a preliminary investigation, police said the suspects broke into at least one vehicle in San Marcos. They also recovered three stolen firearms and two pieces of stolen body armor from the scene.

Both the Texas Rangers and San Marcos police are investigating the incident.
