Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: Wednesday stat tracker

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates in Central Texas for Wednesday, Feb. 9.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: 
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Austin-Travis County: The seven-day moving average for new hospital admissions is 55, and an average of 460 people are hospitalized. The community transmission rate is 413.3 (high) and the positivity rate is 20.7%. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 182,715 cases have been reported and at least 1,295 people have died.
    • Hays County: There are currently 5,266 active cases, and 28 people are currently hospitalized. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 49,967 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 462 people have died. 
    • Williamson County: There are 240 new cases of coronavirus in Williamson County. Eleven percent of hospital beds are available, and 7% of ICU beds are available. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 107,591 cases have been reported and at least 821 people have died.

Updates:

9:05 p.m. – Hays County reported three more COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday – a Driftwood man who was over 100, a San Marcos woman in her 60s and a Wimberley man in his 60s. Officials also reported 404 new confirmed cases along with five new hospitalizations and eight new hospital discharges. There are 947 additional people considered recovered.

4:35 p.m. – Travis County reported 12 more deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday along with 689 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 182,715 cases and 1,295 deaths since the start of the pandemic. At least 179,141 people have recovered from the virus.

Travis County currently has 422 people hospitalized with COVID-19, with 113 in the ICU and 56 on ventilators.

3:10 p.m. – The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) released its latest COVID-19 data:

  • 18.41% positivity statewide

  • 685 new cases for the four-county Austin metro
    • Seven-day average: 873/day
      • Down 15% day-to-day
      • Down 59% from a week ago
      • Down 76% from a month ago
  • Community transmission still falling, down to 413.28 per 100,000
  • Daily hospital admissions down to 54.7/day … lowest of 2022
  • 534 COVID-19 patients in Austin area (TSA O) hospitals

    • 7.4% bed availability
  • 155 C-19 patients in Austin area (TSA O) ICUs
