Road closures continue as crews work to fix massive water main break in northwest Austin

Austin Water said all customers have service as crews continue to work on repairs.

AUSTIN, Texas — Road closures persist in northwest Austin Wednesday as crews continue to work to repair a water main break.

Austin Transportation and Public Works said the break happened just before 10 a.m. Monday, near Texas Loop 360 and Spicewood Springs Road. The leak was actively impacting one water meter, and the outage was initially expected to last until roughly 6:10 p.m.

But in an update early Tuesday morning, Austin Water said repairs continued on the 48-inch water main. Crews worked overnight and made steady progress, restoring service to the commercial customer who was impacted.

As of Wednesday morning, crews have installed the new water line and valve and concrete has been poured to protect that section of new pipe. All customers remain in service, and Austin Water said it appreciates customers who have shut off automatic irrigation systems to reduce demand on the system.

Spicewood Springs Road, east of Loop 360, between 360 and 4900 Spicewood Springs Road, remains closed to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Austin Water now expects the repairs to be complete by Thursday.
