EDINBURG, Texas -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection found and seized more than one ton of marijuana in an incident Friday and then two days later on Sunday, according to a press release.
A Border Patrol K9 at the Falfurrias checkpoint alerted officers to a tractor-trailer early Friday morning. The press release states when agents opened the trailer they discovered a total of 47 bundles of marijuana that were mixed among pallets of cargo. The driver was a U.S. citizen and was arrested, the release states.
The marijuana reportedly weighed over 1,300 pounds and had an estimated street value of over $1 million.
On Sunday, Rio Grande City agents responded to a vehicle leaving the river area at a high rate of speed near La Rosita, Texas. Officials said the vehicle turned around towards the Rio Grande after the agents responded. The vehicle was later found abandoned with 11 bundles and seven bricks of marijuana inside it.
The marijuana weighed almost 900 pounds and had an estimated street value of over $709, 000, officials said.
