Man arrested, charged in 2007 downtown attack

Nearly two years after a man was killed in a fight in a downtown Austin parking lot, Austin homicide detectives have issued an arrest warrant for a man they believe was involved in the attack.

Austin police Tuesday announced they've cracked a 2007 homicide case. Police arrested James Baker, Jr., 25, and charged him with manslaughter, a second degree felony.

Baker is accused of punching 28 year old Jeremy Anderson so hard he fell backward and hit his head on the pavement. Anderson died a week later.

On March 10, 2007, Anderson and a friend were leaving 6th Street when they encountered three men.

Investigators say all five men had been drinking. Words were exchanged and police say that's when Baker punched Anderson.

"It really was just something that really was senseless. It was words that were exchanged and a punch that came out of no where as far as Mr. Anderson was concerned. I don't think he was prepared for it; I don't think he was looking for it," said Sgt. Joseph Chacon, APD Homicide Unit.

Investigators are hoping more witnesses will come forward -- that's why they're not releasing Baker's photo at this time. Even though the investigation continues, police do not expect anyone else to be charged in this case.
