Man arrested on DWI charges after deadly pedestrian crash in southeast Austin

AUSTIN, Texas — A man has been arrested on DWI charges after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in southeast Austin on Sunday morning.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to the crash in the 2000 block of E. Riverside Drive around 6:49 a.m. on Dec. 15.

The pedestrian, later identified as 47-year-old Juan Melesio, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver, 30-year-old Ali-Mbemba Kembilu, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated.

The incident is being investigated as Austin’s 88th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 94 deaths. On the date of this crash in 2023, 87 fatal crashes resulted in 90 deaths.
