AUSTIN, Texas — Stargazers rejoice!
The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks in the late hours of Jan. 3 through the morning of Jan. 4.
Typically, stargazers can expect to see about 25 meteors per hour under the ideal weather conditions of a clear and dark sky. The KVUE weather team's forecast calls for a mostly clear evening, but the forecast is lacking a necessary component for the best stargazing experience.
While clear skies are a key component to viewing a meteor shower, it's also helpful to have a darkened sky. This year's shower unfortunately correlates near the January full moon, which occurs on Jan. 6, meaning the light from the almost full moon will make viewing the meteor shower more difficult.
If you still wish to try your luck with viewing the shower, the optimum viewing time will be around 6 a.m. on Jan. 4. Grab your jacket as you wait outside, because we'll be tracking morning low temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s.
