Blanton and Mexic-Arte museums offer up programming for Austin Museum Day

Austin Museum Day gives you free access to more than 30 museums in the city.

AUSTIN, Texas — This Sunday, you can get into more than 30 Austin museums for free. Austin Museum Day makes this possible.

Some of the participating museums are the Mexic-Arte Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art.

Among the ofrendas, or altars, at the Mexic-Arte Museum, is an altar for the victims of the El Paso mass shooting. It is almost an exact replica of the memorial in El Paso.

The whole museum is Day of the Dead themed, currently.

"Lots of color," said Paulina Dosal-Terminel, education associate for the Mexic-Arte Museum. "We'll be making lots of papier-mâché activities to go along with the exhibit."

On Austin Museum Day on Sunday, Mexic-Arte will also have bilingual book readings and tours at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Artists will be creating a movable sculpture for the museum's annual Day of the Dead festival, "Viva la Vida."

"It's a beautiful way to display not only art but learn a little about the culture behind it," said Dosal-Terminel, "and really celebrate the beauty of the diversity of the communities that we have here in Austin."

Across downtown at the Blanton Museum of Art, the big focal point is Ellsworth Kelly's "Austin."

"The light that you see on the outside is brilliant," said Monique O'Neil, museum educator for family and community programs at the Blanton. "But when you go inside, the vibrancy as it hits at different times of the day along the space is really luminescent and beautiful."

That exhibit will be open along with Jeffrey Gibson's "This is the Day" exhibit.

"This is a vibrant, celebratory exhibition where the artist is really celebrating his Native American culture," said O'Neil.

The Blanton is partnering with other institutions at UT to participate in a self-guided tour across campus.

"This is a museum that I believe is very inclusive and for everybody," said O'Neil.

The Blanton is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the Mexic-Arte Museum is open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Other places you can visit for museum day are the Bullock Museum, the Wildflower Center, the Texas Military Forces Museum and the Thinkery.
