The Band Camino gets the crowd dancing at ACL Fest Weekend 2

The Tennessee-based band talked with KVUE about the surreality of playing ACL for the first time.

AUSTIN, Texas — “I wasn’t expecting it to be this cold," The Band Camino singer and guitarist Jeffery Jordan said before kicking off their Austin City Limits Music Festival Weekend 2 set with “Break Me.”

The Band Camino is a Tennessee-based band whose fans describe them as “heartful rock.” The band told KVUE that with their current members, they’ve only been together for a year-and-a-half.

According to Spotify, they have nearly 70 million streams. This past year, they signed with Elektra Records – who represent artists like Young the Giant and Christina Perri – and released an eight-track EP, much of which they performed at ACL.

As the fans huddled together to see them on the VRBO stage, the band didn't disappoint. The Band Camino said they wanted to “focus on songs that make you wanna dance.”

The setlist consisted of: "Break Me," "See Through," "Less Than I Do," "2/14," "Honest," "Hush Hush," "My Thoughts On You," "Haunted," "What I Want" and "Daphne."

The set was lively and brought a crowd of what seemed to be mostly teenagers and young adults together dancing, having fun and (politely) fighting for guitar picks thrown by bassist Graham Rowell – who took center stage during "Daphne" – and a snapped drumstick thrown by Garrison Burgess.

During an interview with KVUE, The Band Camino said they didn’t realize how big ACL really is, as it was their first time at the festival. They definitely didn’t expect how big of a crowd they had, even though they've played in Texas several times.

"When we got our van, one of our first locations was Dallas" through SoFar Sounds, Rowell said.

Although those crowds weren't as big, the band still said, "Everything is bigger in Texas."

"We love Texas, " Spencer Stewart, the band's other vocalist and guitarist, said.

"We got driven around on a golf cart and it was a 20-minute ride from the bus to the stage and we were like, 'How big is this?'" Jordan said.

"It was very surreal," Rowell said.

During the set, the band danced along with the crowd. During the interview, the rest of the band joked around about Jordan's dance moves.

"My favorite of Jeffrey's dance moves are his giant steps," Burgess said, mimicking Jordan.

"I like the one where [Jordan] will go full spread and lean all the way back, touch the ground and pop back," Stewart said.

"I haven't done that on stage yet!" Jordan said.

The band will be headed to Houston for their next show and plan to be writing and recording all next summer.

They hope to have their debut album released by the end of 2020.
