Red River Cultural District announces return of 'Free Week' in January

The admission-free festival will be held Friday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 6.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Red River Cultural District's "Free Week" music festival returns in January!

Free Week is a bit of a misleading name. While the annual event does give music-lovers the chance to check out local venues and musicians for free, it doesn't actually last a week. This upcoming festival will be held Friday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 6.

The fest will feature performances by local musicians at dozens of Red River Cultural District venues, including:

The full lineup for both days of the festival is still to come.

Free Week began at Emo's original location near Sixth and Red River streets in 2003. The event is currently organized by the Red River Culture District and serves as a compliment to the nonprofit's other annual admission-free festival, "Hot Summer Nights."

The nonprofit said that, collectively, "tens of thousands of local residents and hundreds of local bands participate in these two downtown music fests each year in an effort to support, uplift, and preserve Austin’s music economy."
