AUSTIN, Texas — Austin and Travis County leaders canceled South by Southwest 2020 on Friday. Here's how the festival impacted the City in 2019.
In total, approximately 417,400 people attended the SXSW Conference, festivals and various events from March 4 to March 17, 2019, according to SXSW.
The conference itself drew nearly 74,000 attendees for nearly 5,000 conference speakers.
SXSW's music festival drew more than 230,000 attendees to see nearly 2,000 total acts across 94 stages. Additionally, the festival received almost 8,000 artist showcase applications.
The film festival had approximately 73,000 attendees. There were 155 world premieres and a total of 425 screenings.
The gaming festival featured 157 speakers and 80 sessions, bringing in approximately 50,000 attendees.
Regarding housing, more than 55,000 hotel rooms were booked across 58 official hotels.
According to SXSW, the 2019 festival brought in $355 million in total, $5 million more than 2018's festival.
Breaking that number down; $182.1 million came from official attendance, including expenditures by SXSW participants and single ticket holders; $157.1 million came from SXSW maintaining a staff made up of full-time, temporary and seasonal employees; and $16.7 million came from consumer expenditures.
