Things to do in the Austin area this weekend: Hot Summer Nights, 'Shrek: The Musical' and more

Here’s a breakdown of just some of the events you can attend this weekend.

AUSTIN, Texas — The weekend is upon us and, as always, there are a ton of things going on in the Austin area! From a free music festival to a musical based on a popular film, there's no shortage of fun activities happening over the next few days.

Here’s a breakdown of just some of the events you can attend this weekend.

Hot Summer Nights

It's time to celebrate Austin's status as the "Live Music Capital of the World" with a free music festival aimed at showcasing local artists and venues in the Red River Cultural District (RRCD).

This year's fest comes as the RRCD has been pushing for more funding from the city of Austin so its venues can continue to operate. Check out the fest's full lineup.

When and where: Thursday through Saturday at Red River Cultural District venues

Mi Música Fest

On Saturday, 107.1 La Z and Latino 93.3 will host Mi Música Fest, featuring live performances from a half-dozen Latin artists. The family-friendly event will serve to celebrate Latin music and culture in Central Texas.

Artists on the bill include Dinastia de Tuzantla, Banda Los Sebastianes, Los Retonos del Rio, Los dos del S, La Leyenda and Zenal Nortex. Tickets are available online.

When and where: Saturday starting at 3 p.m. at Round Rock Amp, located at 3701 N. Interstate 35

"Shrek the Musical"

This weekend offers not one but two opportunities to see productions of "Shrek The Musical."

First, as part of their Summer Theatre Series, dozens of Austin ISD students will perform in their own production of the show at the AISD Performing Arts Center, located at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd. Last week, we spoke to some of the students involved in the Summer Theatre Series about their experience.

There will be four shows: Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are available online.

But if you can't make it to any of the students' performances – or you just really can't get enough Shrek – a professional production of the show will stop at Bass Concert Hall, located at 2350 Robert Dedman Drive, on Sunday at 6 p.m. The venue promises "fun-filled Shrek-themed activities" before the curtain goes up.

Tickets to that show are also available online.
