AUSTIN, Texas — "Austin City Limits" (ACL) is set to mark 50 years since its first taping this October. And who better to play its birthday party than the artist who performed during its pilot?
ACL announced Friday that Willie Nelson and Family will perform during the "Austin City Limits 50th Birthday Bash" on Oct. 17 on the lawn at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Opening for Nelson & Co. will be Austin-based country group Asleep at the Wheel.
This outdoor concert will be something of a full-circle moment. On Oct. 17, 1974, ACL welcomed Nelson to the stage to tape the pilot episode of what is now the longest running music television show in U.S. history.
Since that first ACL performance, Nelson has appeared on the program 18 times – more than any other performer. He was also the first inductee into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, and has a bronze statue located outside ACL Live at the Moody Theater.
How can you attend the Birthday Bash?
This concert isn't following the traditional ticket model. Fans have the opportunity to register for a chance to attend but can't access tickets to the event directly until after they've been selected.
Registration opened at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, and will remain open through 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23. Those selected to attend will be notified on either Sept. 26 or 27.
ACL said an invitation email for a chance to get tickets doesn't guarantee you'll be able to get one. Tickets are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. A maximum of two tickets can be claimed, and the tickets are non-transferrable. There will not be a standby line.
The concert on the Long Center's lawn will be "picnic style," meaning chairs aren't allowed.
ACL said fans can check ACLTurns50.com closer to the date of the show for more information about other items that are allowed or prohibited, parking and more.
