Paddles with a Purpose: Breast cancer survivors bonding through dragon boat racing

Paddles with a Purpose started in Austin in 2019 and is connecting breast cancer survivors of all ages through dragon boat racing.

AUSTIN, Texas — October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One local group of breast cancer survivors have found friendship and strength through a shared loved of dragon boat racing.

From surviving to thriving, Paddles with a Purpose is a dragon boat racing team made up of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and 1 steersperson. The group welcomes all breast cancer survivors at any stage of treatment or recovery throughout the year to see if dragon boating is fun and beneficial to them.

Drag boat racing is a traditional Asian sport that's become popular nationwide and globally. The boat itself is 40 feet long and the dragon head and tail are typically attached for races, which makes the boats look fun and colorful during competitions.

Paddles with a Purpose started in Austin in 2019, and the team focuses on living life to the fullest rather than focusing on the disease that brought them together. The women take to the water practicing about twice a week and compete all over.

Currently undefeated, their hope is that more survivors join them and experience the benefit of healthy exercise while making friends along the way.

"Dragon boat racing helps with lymph nodes and as we move our upper body, it helps us build endurance and strength. So, yes, this is a good exercise for all survivors," said Lyndia Garza, a member of Paddles with Purpose.

Experience is definitely not needed. The team says their only desire is to learn and have fun. They're also looking for about 10 new members to join.

"Breast cancer is what we had in common to bring us together but really, it's the desire to live life fully that really bonds this team. So it's a great place for support, it's great exercise. Research has shown that the movement of dragon boat paddling is particularly good for breast cancer survivors [because] it helps with lymphatic issues, great exercise, a good core workout," said Bobbi Mooney, another team member.

Paddles with a Purpose plans to take their talents next to Miami in October for a competition before heading to compete in France in 2026.

"The camaraderie of this team is fantastic. It's the most supportive, fun bunch of women. All ages are welcomed and all that are survivor. It's just so supportive," team member Beth Rowan said.
