Who needs the ocean? Surfing comes to Deep Ellum

Goodsurf is the only entertainment venue of its kind in Dallas

DALLAS — Deep Ellum has a lot to offer, but a new entertainment venue is really making waves.

Literally.

“It’s probably the best fun you’re going to have on a wave compared to the ocean or lake,” said Bryan Van Der Meer, general manager of Goodsurf.

Goodsurf is a surfing-based entertainment concept with its first location now open in Deep Ellum. Although surfing is the main thing, it’s not the only thing.

“It’s one of a kind, with so many things to do as you walk in here,” Van Der Meer said.

The fastest-growing sport in America, pickleball, also has a prominent spot at the venue. Guests can rent one of four courts to play.

A full-service bar and restaurant cater to hungry surfers or those who just want to sit and watch. Goodsurf serves classics like a smashburger with fries but also unique items with a pan-Asian theme.

There are often special deals and items, like this week’s watermelon and pineapple skewers with tajin.

“We do have guests come in just for the food because the menu is so unique and so different,” Van Der Meer said.

Van Der Meer says there’s no other venue like it in Dallas, but perhaps what Goodsurf has that’s even harder to find in Deep Ellum: parking.

Lots of it.

“I believe we have the most parking out of any establishment in Deep Ellum,” he said.

They encourage anyone to pull up, even those who’ve never stepped foot on a board before.

They’ll teach riders all they need to know.

“It’s not intimidating at all,” said Van Der Meer, who got the hang of it quickly despite never having surfed before.

To help beginners get started, this week walk-ins get their first pickleball and surfing visit for free.
