AUSTIN, Texas — As part of KVUE's celebration of Women’s History Month, we visited Emily Butler at her home, where she’s running her business, The Good Hippie, out of her converted garage.
Butler is a new mom who’s proving her doubters wrong as her company thrives.
While on a journey of self-love, she came across The Good Hippie.
“One of my first jobs in Austin, I met the founder of The Good Hippie,” Butler said. “Fast-forward to 2018, she told me she wants to sell the business.”
Because she loved the business so much, Butler asked to buy The Good Hippie. But although she was ready to bet on herself, she had her doubters.
“Primarily men telling me that it was a bad idea,” Butler said.
But the woman she looks up to the most gave her the confidence to forge ahead.
“My mom bought me this mug that says, ‘Don’t quit your daydream.' I’m reminded every day I use that mug to keep pushing forward,” Butler said. “If someone tells me I can’t do something, it makes me go, ‘OK, watch. Watch me. I’ll do it.”
Butler hopes her story will inspire other women to take chances on themselves.
“I think it’s important for women to follow their dreams and to be a business owner so it’s not a novelty,” Butler said. “I want to show my daughter that you can be successful, and you can do whatever you want. And if somebody does put a limit on you, do it anyway.”
