AUSTIN, Texas — It's pretty common to see deer near roads around Austin. As a result, unfortunately, many of them do get hit by cars.
On Monday night, Austin's Animal Advisory Commission looked at potential changes to the way the City handles injured deer.
Currently, City veterinarians can't take euthanasia drugs out of their offices and police officers can't fire their guns without approval.
Because of those stipulations, the commission looked at some rule changes that would allow police to humanely euthanize an injured animal if necessary.
One Austinite who saw a dying deer near his home told the commission that the process needs to be more efficient to keep animals from suffering.
"We called the game warden. The game warden said it's in a City park. Call up, ask the park rangers. They said they'd be there in 14 days," Craig Nazo said.
At its Monday night meeting, the commission decided to form a working group to study this issue further before they send a recommendation for new rules to the Austin City Council.
