AUSTIN, Texas — On Sunday, the Austin Humane Society (AHS) said it assisted in a rescue effort involving more than 50 dogs living on a single property in Comanche County, Texas, about two and a half hours northwest of Austin.
AHS said in a coordinated rescue with other animal welfare groups, it transferred 13 chihuahua mixes to its shelter Sunday afternoon. AHS said the dogs had been living outside or in vehicles on the property.
The 13 dogs taken in by AHS range in age from about 10 weeks to 6 years old, and the organization said the dogs were suffering from flea infestations and some minor skin issues but otherwise appear healthy. The dogs seem to be chihuahua mixes, according to AHS, and are undergoing medical evaluations.
The organization said the dogs could be made available for adoption as soon as Monday afternoon.

Adoption inquiries can be made on the AHS website. Adult dogs are $100 to adopt and puppies will be $300. AHS said all of the dogs will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, treated for parasites and will receive their age-appropriate vaccinations before heading to their new homes.
If you're unable to adopt one of the dogs but still want to help, you can donate to support their care.
