GEORGETOWN, Texas — If you step foot into Blue Moon Sanctuary in Georgetown, it's likely you'll bear witness to the busy routine – cleaning up animal poop, feeding time and a lot of care.
For Anna Eby, it's a dream she didn't think she would live out until retirement.
But the former Georgetown City Council member resigned from her seat in 2019 to live on the pasture and run the sanctuary. She still works as a full-time lawyer, but the council rules require members to live in their district, which the pasture where Eby now lives isn't in.
"It became my passion to rescue them and to really dedicate a lot of time and resources to that," said Eby. "The opportunity just arose and it turned out to be the best thing."
She said the decision was definitely tough.
"I really need somebody to be here and I thought maybe it should just be me," said Eby. "I got out here and I realized it was the best decision I've ever made in my life."
The property is 30 acres and is home to around 60 animals, 40 of which are donkeys.

Other animals include full-size horses, a couple pigs, a guinea hen and an adorable orange cat. Eby said the animals are all rescues.
"Everybody here is a rescue. Primarily horses and donkeys are rescues from the slaughter pipeline, so they were actually on their way to be slaughtered," said Eby. "They just live out here and exist and are happy."
The donkeys are typically quarantined for 30 days off site before getting to the sanctuary for medical work, according to Eby.
