It's a girl! Teachers help deliver baby in school gym bathroom

Carina Rodriguez was at an award ceremony for her son when she went into labor. School officials called 911 but Baby Girl Rodriguez impatiently charged ahead.

BLUFF SPRINGS, Texas — Editor's note: The attached video is about the first babies born in the Austin-area in 2020.

On Wednesday, a woman gave birth to a baby girl in the gym bathroom at the IDEA Bluff Springs public school during a student award ceremony.

Carina Rodriguez was attending the award ceremony to celebrate her second-grade son when she went into labor. Some of the campus's teachers found her in the gym bathroom at the end of the ceremony and immediately called 911.

Before EMS had a chance to arrive, the baby girl was delivered with the help of teachers. Rodriguez and her newborn daughter were transferred to a nearby hospital and are both healthy.

IDEA Bluff Springs principal Virginia Callaway, along with teachers Valentina Davalos, Amberlynn Balli and Erica Beverly, visited the mother in the hospital on Thursday morning to surprise her with a college scholarship for her newborn daughter upon her graduation at an IDEA Public School.
