Art-loving teen in foster care says he wants to find a family he can trust

Mason likes drawing anime and creating costumes, and he wants to be a middle school math teacher someday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Every week on KVUE Daybreak, we feature a different child in the Texas foster care system, in hopes of helping them get adopted by a forever family.

This week, KVUE's Hannah Rucker had the pleasure of meeting up with 16-year-old Mason at Blue Moon Glassworks on 43rd Street in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood.

The owner of the shop, Jim Berry, was so kind to them and taught them how to blow glass and create their own designs.

Mason said art has helped him throughout his childhood.

"I like drawing anime and creating costumes," Mason said. "It helps me learn more about myself."

Mason is gearing up for his junior year starting in the fall and is hopeful he can find a forever family before finishing high school.

"I just want to be with a family that I can trust, and that they can give me what I need in order to become an adult," Mason said. "My love language is physical touch, so I love hugs, holding hands. I love to be comforted and stuff like that."

Mason would also like to go to college someday and become an educator.

"I want to be a math teacher for middle school," Mason said. "I've been wanting to for a while. I remember when I was in middle school and, although it's chaotic, I feel like I can deal with those kids,"

To learn more about Mason or to put in an inquiry to adopt him, visit his page on the Heart Gallery of Central Texas.

KVUE launched the Forever Families segment with Partnerships for Children (PFC) in June 2020 to highlight children in the Heart Gallery of Central Texas who need secure and permanent families. Every day, there are nearly 1,000 children waiting to get adopted in Central Texas, according to PFC.

Editor's noteThe children who are in the Heart Gallery program and featured in KVUE's Forever Families segments are children who have had every effort made on their behalf to connect them with family or others in their community to provide options for permanent, adoptive homes. Through no fault of their own, that hasn’t happened yet, and so in partnership with the Department of Family and Protective Services, we collaborate to bring awareness to KVUE viewers about these children in the hopes of finding them permanency before they age out.
