Popular Pflugerville pitmaster John Brotherton dies, family says

The family said John Brotherton passed away as a result of a medical event he suffered almost two weeks ago.

AUSTIN, Texas — The owner of the critically acclaimed restaurant Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue has died.

Family members say John Brotherton died after suffering a medical event earlier this month.

His restaurant became a Pflugerville favorite, eventually earning a spot multiple times on Texas Monthly's list of top 50 barbecue joints in the Lone Star State.

KVUE spoke with Brotherton back in 2016 when he was first starting his restaurant venture.

"Ultimately, I want to open up a restaurant here in town," Brotherton said during that 2016 interview. "That's always been my goal. The number one goal from the start is I want to put Pflugerville on the barbecue map. When people say good barbecue cities, I want them to say Pflugerville."

The family set up a GoFundMe, which has raised more than $100,000 so far.
