AUSTIN, Texas — Austin's first-ever vegan gastropub is shutting its doors for good.
On Tuesday, The Beer Plant posted to social media announcing its closure, with its final day set for Sunday, Dec. 22.
“It has been a sincere honor to serve Austin the plant-based, nightlife experience that we embarked on over 8 years ago," the post said in part.
According to owners Sarah and Ray McMackin, the main reasons behind the closure are twofold. For one, creating recipes from scratch has become a costly endeavor, especially during a recent period of inflation. Additionally, the business said it has also lost business since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Beer Plant initially opened back in 2016 in Austin's Tarrytown neighborhood, taking over what was previously home to coffee shop Austin Java.
During its time in operation, the vegan gastropub has served up unique beverages like the Bourbon Sweet Tea, chocolate martini, campari sour, frozen watermelon cocktails and Pineapple Tamarind Old Fashioned. It has also offered a variety of meatless meal options, including the Hillcountry Chicken, Cowboy Burger, Crab Cakes, Lentil Wellington and the Kokies Curry.
Customers have had the option to sit inside or outside and can also order online. During its final few weeks in operation, the pub will continue to accept walk-ins and reservations as usual.
"We hope that you'll come by for a last meal and a cheers with us over the coming days," The Beer Plant's social media stated.
The Beer Plant is located at 3110 Windsor Road, northwest of Downtown Austin.
