AUSTIN, Texas — Where can you find the best tacos in Texas? Many say San Antonio. Others say Austin. Still others say there's nothing better than a taco from the Rio Grande Valley.
While the Great Texas Taco Debate has raged on for years and will never truly be settled, Yelp has officially weighed in – and crowned a taco truck in Central East Austin the winner.
The review site recently published its "Best Taco Spot in Every State 2024" list, and Cuantos Tacos was named the best for the Lone Star State.
How did Yelp calculate which taco spot is the best?
Yelp said it identified businesses in the taco category with the largest concentration of reviews mentioning relevant keywords, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and rating of reviews mentioning those keywords between Jan. 1, 2019, and July 1, 2019.
If a business with multiple locations appeared on the list more than once, Yelp only included the highest-rated location. According to the review site, all the businesses featured in its lists were marked open on Yelp as of July 18, 2024, and when available, all businesses on the list have a passing health score as of the same day.
What Yelp had to say about Cuantos Tacos
Yelp writes that Luis "Beto" Robledo's taco truck starts with traditional 3-inch nixtamal tortillas sourced from the Colonial Tortilla Factory in San Antonio. The Mexico City-style street tacos are then filled with a number of topping options, including suaderos (seasoned beef brisket), cachete (beef cheek) and, on Wednesdays, lengua (tongue).
One Yelp Elite reviewer, Abida H., wrote, "Often debated to be the #1 best taco in the city, these are small street tacos [like] you would find in Mexico City. They’re simple, juicy, and devoured in 2–3 bites each! My favorite is the suadero taco (brisket, onion, and cilantro), but it only makes sense that you try them all."
Cuantos Tacos is located in the Arbor Food Truck Park on East 12th Street. It's open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
