10 families finalize adoptions for 'Austin Adoption Day'

Ten families made their adoptions official during "Austin Adoption Day" through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

AUSTIN, Texas — Thursday was a happy day for 10 families who finalized adoptions in Austin.

It wasn't the typical courtroom setting. Instead, stuffed animals were lined up throughout the courtroom, and a judge wore a tiara at the Travis County Civil and Family Courts Facility.

Ten families made their adoptions official during "Austin Adoption Day" through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).

One of those growing families was Joseph and Jennifer Calderon's. They adopted 20-month-old twins, Isabella and Leo.

"It's unbelievable. It completes our journey of wanting to be parents now. Forever, we can say they are ours," Jennifer Calderon said.

Nine other families also shared that special moment Thursday. According to DFPS, more than 4,000 children have been adopted across the state this year, including 136 in Travis County. However, more than 2,200 children are still waiting to find permanent adoptive homes.

The Calderons have a message for anyone considering adoption.

"If you are able and capable, there are so many that need someone to give them stability and a home," Jennifer Calderon said.
