Christmas came early to an Austin retirement home -- complete with puppy paws and Santa Claus

There was plenty of Christmas cheer to go around at one retirement community in Austin on Christmas Eve.

AUSTIN — There was plenty of Christmas cheer to go around on Christmas Eve at the Clairmont Retirement Community.

Therapy dogs, carolers and even Santa paid a visit.

Of course, we had to ask what everyone had on their Christmas list this year.

A simple answer of "peace on Earth," came from Jane Perdue.

Other residents had similar wishes and also wanted to spend time with family.

The therapy dogs from The Dog Alliance helped spread some love until their families could visit.

"The energy, the vibe, if you're here, you can literally feel it coming out of everyone," Tina Bertelle, the Life Enrichment Director for the community, said. "For that moment, they're ageless, timeless and the memories are lasting."

Bertelle said the therapy dogs are "the best present" for the seniors.

"I think pets always make somebody feel better. I think somebody told us once upon a time that dogs make us better people. I think that's probably true," resident Lana Cloud said.

Residents also got a chance to talk with Silver Santa, a new program serving low-income seniors and veterans, which started in Austin.

"After being at the centers, we noticed the lack of family being there, so we decided we need to do something about it," Deborah Parsons, with Silver Santa, said.

Parsons said even though they are based in Central Texas, they serve seniors nationwide.
