AUSTIN, Texas — On Sunday evening, Gov. Greg Abbott celebrated Hanukkah with leaders of the Jewish community at the Texas State Capitol.
The governor has held the event every year since taking office, but this year was the biggest showing yet.
There was a menorah lighting ceremony, and the governor lit the Shamash – the servant candle. There was also a prayer for the return of Israeli hostages and protection of the innocent in the Middle East.
The governor reminded Texans of the message behind the holiday.
“When we gather on evenings like this to light the menorah, we remember the lessons that this holiday teaches – hope, peace and perseverance. This year, these lessons are even more important as the Jewish homeland fights against the terrorism of Hamas,” Abbott said. “I know our Jewish community in Texas feels the assault of antisemitism maybe more than ever, at least in recent times. Now more than ever, we as a state, we as a people must be vigilant against antisemitism, to combat antisemitism and potential threats.”
Abbott has set aside $10 million to enhance safety at Jewish and Israeli synagogues and schools. He has also directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to work with local and federal intelligence agencies to evaluate potential threats.
