AUSTIN, Texas — It’s an annual Austin tradition.
The Capitol 10K celebrates 42 years this Sunday, April 7, and more than 23,000 runners are expected to participate.
Gerre Boardman is one of those runners. She has participated in every single Capitol 10K since its first year in 1978.
Boardman began running as a young mother in 1969. She would wake up early in the morning before her family was awake, would go out and run for 30 to 45 minutes, then come back and get her family ready for the day.

Boardman was inspired to run in the first Cap 10K because the newspaper said anyone could participate. She said each year was special, but the event has come a long way.
In its first year, the Capitol 10K had 3,400 runners. In 2018, that number grew by 20,000. Race Director Jeff Simecek attributes the race growth to keeping the “Austin flavor” the original race had.
Registration is still open through Saturday at 5 p.m. You can register here or visit the Health and Fitness Expo at Palmer Events Center, Friday 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
