AUSTIN -- There's some controversy brewing over the peacocks that have roamed the South Austin Bouldin Creek Community for the past six decades.

While many homeowners enjoy the free roaming birds, a new neighbor has filed several complaints with Austin Animal Control.

The peacocks are owned by the restaurant Green Pastures. The company was recently cited by animal control to contain the birds from going out onto the street.

"What's next, a no-fly zone so that our cars don't get bird poop on them?" asked homeowner Lorie Barzano, who is upset over the new neighbor's complaints.

Barzano said the peacocks are an essential part of the flavor of the community, and doesn't want to see them in cages.

"They just always have lived here and everybody knows that who lives here," she said.

Barzano has started a petition to keep the peacock's status quo as is. So far, she has collected more than 160 signatures. She said she will take the petition to city council, if necessary.

A manager for Green Pastures tells KVUE they are working with a lawyer on the animal control citation, and they hope to continue to keep the peacocks uncaged.
