Georgetown couple fostering dogs for military members

Rhonda and Mike Collins are among many who foster animals for military members while they are deployed.

GEORGETOWN, Texas – For many soldiers and military support staff, figuring out what to do with their pets is tough when they're deployed.

"If we can provide a safe environment for pets, that's what we want to do," said Rhonda Collins with Dogs on Deployment.

Rhonda and Mike Collins are fostering Lexy and Brewski for Ryan Watson of Round Rock. Watson is working in Kuwait until August.

"She's constantly sending me stuff through Facebook. You know she sends me pictures, videos and keeping me well-updated and stuff on them," said Watson in a Skype interview.

"I hope it lifts his spirits and he's reassured that his dogs are being well taken care of," said Rhonda.

The Dogs on Deployment website connects deploying personnel with fosters. Since 2011 is has found a temporary home for nearly 650 pets, including 65 in Texas.

"She's (Lexy) very affectionate, she wants to be by me constantly. Brewski, he's always wanting to play," said Watson of his two beagles.

Soldiers' reunions with their four-legged friends can be an emotional affair that is often documented on YouTube. Watson says he can't wait, neither can Collins.

"I've thought about the joy they will all have when he comes back home," said Rhonda.
