3 young fossil hunters discover rare teenage T. rex while hiking

Only a handful of juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons have ever been found worldwide.

DENVER — A rare dinosaur fossil is going on display at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

A juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex fossil that was discovered in the North Dakota badlands will be featured at the museum's new temporary exhibit "Discovering Teen Rex."

The fossil is one of only a handful of juvenile T. rex skeletons that has ever been found.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DNMS) said the T. rex fossil was discovered by a family on a hike in 2022. The family contacted DMNS who returned to the site to excavate the fossil in 2023.

The public will be able to see the fossil being prepped in real time at the museum exhibit, as well as an array of dinosaur fossils, including Triceratops and Edmontosaurus. The exhibit opens Friday, June 21.

"By going outside and embracing their passions and the thrill of discovery, these boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world," said Tyler Lyson, curator of paleontology at DMNS. "I'm excited for museum guests to dig into the 'Teen Rex Discovery' experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and wonder, not only our community, but around the world."

The discovery and excavation of the T. rex is featured in a 40-minute documentary, “T. REX,” showing at Denver Museum of Nature & Science's giant-screen Infinity Theater beginning Friday, June 21.
