What you need to know about fireworks in Travis County

One of the most exciting parts of Independence Day is sitting back and watching the fireworks with family and friends. While some attend professional firework shows, others choose to set off the colorful works of art themselves.

Chicago, UNITED STATES: Fireworks are seen from the roof of the Hilton Hotel 03 July 2007 as burst above Lake Michigan along the shores of downtown Chicago, Illinois. The celebration is part of the US Independence Day holiday celebrated on the 4th of July.

One of the most exciting parts of Independence Day is sitting back and watching the fireworks with family and friends. While some attend professional firework shows, others choose to set off the colorful works of art themselves.

Although performing a fireworks show in your own backyard might seem easy enough, a 2014 study from the Consumer Product Safety Commissions showed that's not always the case.

In fact, the study said over 200 people go to the emergency room from firework-related injuries in the month surrounding July Fourth.

Travis County Emergency Services said it's legal to sell and possess fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Travis County, but it's banned within the Austin city limits and surrounding districts. Fireworks are also not allowed in parks managed and owned by Travis County.

The City of Austin said this excludes snakes, glow worms, trick noisemakers and wire sparklers which are all legal within the city limits without a permit.

Nonetheless, if you live in an area where it is "okay" to use fireworks, Travis County officials recommend the following safety tips:

  1. Buy from reliable sellers
  2. Have water on hand in case of a fire
  3. Read and follow label directions and warnings
  4. Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned
  5. Never give fireworks or sparklers to small children
