One of the most exciting parts of Independence Day is sitting back and watching the fireworks with family and friends. While some attend professional firework shows, others choose to set off the colorful works of art themselves.
Although performing a fireworks show in your own backyard might seem easy enough, a 2014 study from the Consumer Product Safety Commissions showed that's not always the case.
In fact, the study said over 200 people go to the emergency room from firework-related injuries in the month surrounding July Fourth.
Travis County Emergency Services said it's legal to sell and possess fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Travis County, but it's banned within the Austin city limits and surrounding districts. Fireworks are also not allowed in parks managed and owned by Travis County.
The City of Austin said this excludes snakes, glow worms, trick noisemakers and wire sparklers which are all legal within the city limits without a permit.
Nonetheless, if you live in an area where it is "okay" to use fireworks, Travis County officials recommend the following safety tips:
- Buy from reliable sellers
- Have water on hand in case of a fire
- Read and follow label directions and warnings
- Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned
- Never give fireworks or sparklers to small children
