AUSTIN, Texas — While local restaurants have been able to stay afloat by providing curbside orders for weeks now, local retailers haven't had that option.
But, under Gov. Greg Abbott's new plan to revamp the Texas economy, retail stores across Texas can start offering to-go services starting on April 24.
Local stores are already creating a game plan for how they will safely reopen and facilitate the to-go orders.
Allens Boots, a staple on South Congress since 1977, said it understands browsing in its aisles is a huge part of the shopping experience. President Teddy Boxburger said they will now allow people to try on different boots, curbside.
"As we all know, trying on a pair of boots and making sure they fit perfectly is a huge part of the boot-buying process, so if you call ahead or even just show up we have plenty of folks inside who can bring the boots to you and have you try them on at a safe distance," said Boxburger.
Other longtime Austin stores like Toy Joy, a fun, quirky shop that's been providing for families for more than 30 years, said it's had to really ramp up its online presence in the past month to keep things going.
"We created a website from the ground up," said partner Robby Pettinato. "We've just been throwing things to the wall to see what sticks. We know our brands are too important and they're bigger than we are to just quietly fade away."
Human Health and Services released guidelines that employers as well as employees are expected to follow when returning to work. Employees are to be trained on environmental cleaning before returning. They also must be screened for any potential COVID-19 symptoms.
