AUSTIN, Texas — A million people still need to find work in Texas.
In Austin, the unemployment rate is going down. The Austin-Round Rock unemployment rate is 5.3%. To compare, Texas had 7.2% unemployed in March 2021.
“Since the week ending March 14, 2020, the Texas Workforce Commission has processed over 7.9 million claims for unemployment insurance benefits. That’s more than the last six years of unemployment claims since March,” Cisco Gamez, media and public relations specialist for the Texas Workforce Commission said in a Facebook Watch video.
Bureau of Labor Statistics data show Texas is still down hundreds of thousands of jobs since March 2021, but had the second-highest job increases in the country.
TWC shows job openings rose higher in construction, as well as leisure and hospitality. By percent, oil and natural gas jobs grew the most in Texas last month.
If you factor in the season, Texas is at 6.9%. Seasonally adjusted data isn’t available on a metro-basis.
